Discovering the Virginia Beach Public Library: More Than Just Books
Hi, friend! Let’s talk about a spot that’s probably not the first thing on your list of places to explore—the Virginia Beach Public Library (VBPL). I know, I know… libraries don’t exactly scream “adventure,” but trust me, this place is full of surprises.
My First Visit
I actually wandered into the Princess Anne branch by accident while my son was playing at the rec center next door. I figured I’d pop in for a quick look—five minutes, tops. But y’all, I was shocked at what I found.

The second I stepped inside, I was greeted by the friendliest staff. One librarian must have noticed my I have no idea what I’m doing here look because she immediately came over to help.
I told her I was new to the area and just looking around, and then I saw them—surfboards. Y’ALL, you can check out a surfboard from the library. Did you know that?! At that point, I was intrigued. The further I wandered, the more surprised I was.The library felt warm and welcoming, with all sorts of things to discover. I was especially drawn to a beautifully intricate origami display—just one of the many little details that made the space feel special.

The Details

There are 10 branches across the city, including a law library and a bookmobile. Each location has its own unique offerings, but the Explore the Outdoors section truly blew my mind.
I mean, surfboards at the library?! As a city girl, that’s just so wild to me! And if surfing isn’t your thing, don’t worry—there are plenty of other options. Think giant Jenga, bird-watching kits, camping gear, pickleball and disc golf sets… seriously, they have everything. Next on my list? Checking out a pickleball set and finally trying disc golf.

Another amazing feature? A computer station with a playpen-style attachment! If you’re a caregiver with a little one, you can actually get things done while they stay safe and entertained. This is such a game-changer for parents who need to print documents, send emails, or just have a moment to focus.I was also really excited about the plant swap. Back home, I had a beautiful collection of plants that I had to rehome before moving here. Finding this little gem at the library was such a happy surprise—it’s the perfect way to start rebuilding my plant collection!
